George Wyndham Hamilton Knight-Bruce was born in 1852 into a wealthy family at Keston in Kent. He was educated at Eton and Merton College, Oxford. After recovering from a hunting accident, he vowed to devote his life to God's work. He was ordained a priest in the Church of England in 1876. In 1885, at age 33, he was nominated to be Bishop of the diocese of Bloemfontein, Africa.
